After a holiday yesterday after the sports day, Ono students returned to normal classes. But not us! Instead, we hopped on a bus and headed to Kyoto!
According to Wikipedia, Kyoto is described as:
Kyoto (京都市 Kyōto-shi, is a city located in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. It has a population close to 1.5 million. Formerly the Imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years, it is now the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture located in the Kansai region, as well as a major part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. Kyoto is also known as the thousand-year capital.
We were lucky enough to visit two different places. First we headed up the hill to see Kiyomizu-dera which is one of Kyoto's most popular and most enjoyable temples. The Hondō (Main Hall) has a huge veranda that is supported by pillars and juts out over the hillside. Just below this hall is the waterfall Otowa-no-taki, where visitors drink sacred waters believed to bestow health and longevity. Dotted around the precincts are other halls and shrines. There is also beautiful views of Kyoto below.
After a very quick shop, we headed off for a shabu-shabu lunch. Students got to cook their own lunch on their tables in a broth that was on a hot plate. Everyone did a great job of eating most of the vegetables too!
After lunch was our second visit - Kinkaku-ji - the Golden Pavilion. Kyoto's famed Kinkaku-ji, is one of Japan's best-known sights. The main hall, covered in brilliant gold leaf, shining above its reflecting pond is truly spectacular. Students had the opportunity to wander around the grounds and take some beautiful pictures before hopping back on the bus for home.
This weekend we have a long weekend - Monday is a public holiday - Respect for the Aged Day. Have a great weekend everyone!!
